Now, I feel like a bad blogger. But to be honest, (because
let’s face it… that’s what the internet is for, is it not?) I haven’t felt much
like updating it. I then proceeded to go on vacation to New Orleans, and have
way too much fun and way too much food, and I really would love to be back
there right about now. I have since, completed Beautiful Creatures. Having seen the movie first (yes, I know), I
can say that they are to be taken as two very different entities. The movie is
gorgeous as a visual piece of artwork. And I will say that it was better
adapted (style-wise) than the Twilight
movies were. But then again, there are no sparkling vampires in these books.
It took me a while to get through it for a few reasons: 1) I
was really gung-ho about the beginning and was very excited to read something
easier than what I had just finished, 2) this sentiment that made me excited
also dwindled half-way through which made the book seem contrived, and ultimately
led to 3) the realization that I have to be in a very specific mood to read the
YA/fantasy/supernatural genre (or whatever you want to call it). It took me a
while to want to pick it up and “delve” into, because it would have as if I
attempted a dive (albeit a wimpy one) into the four-foot end of a pool. It was
fun, but it didn’t hold my interest for very long. So I finished it about 2
weeks ago.
I have, since, started reading Cloud Atlas. I really really
wanted to see what the fuss was with this book. And so far (again, me having an
off week and wanting to crawl into a hole and taking a while to get into it) it
is quite fabulous. I love the construction of the stories so far. I am very
interested to see where this story (these stories) take(s) me. I also am waiting
to see the movie until I have finished reading the book (which is the way
things normally work in my life). Read first, watch second. Sometimes it gets a
little ass-backwards. But then, what doesn’t in this world?
In other news, NaNoWriMo is now five days underway, and I am
subsequently 3000 words behind. Although there are weekend days to make up the
difference during the week. Writing is not the easiest thing for me to do at
work, even if my job does allow for it. I get so wrapped up in my thoughts and
the plot and my characters and the emotions, that I might forget to actually do
my job when it is needed to be done. I lose myself in the act of writing, which
is not bad, but is not good when you need a paycheck.
For now I can say that I need a break from shallow (forgive
the word, it is not intended to be offensive here) stories of the YA world. I
need some depth and challenge and meaning. There’s very little left in my life
that is challenging that I fear I may lose some intelligence if I were to keep
it up. If you are a NaNoWriMo-er, tally ho! I hope that you make it to your
dreams of 50,000 words.
I will see you all on the other side. For now, I must log
off my work computer, head home, and continue my writing ventures.
